A Kitten’s First Days in a New Home: Stress-Free Adaptation
(British Rainbow*PL Guide)

The day has finally arrived! After weeks of waiting, completing the starter kit, and cat-proofing the windows, you carry into your home a carrier with a small, purring treasure from British Rainbow*PL. You are excited, the kids are jumping for joy, and the whole family is waiting for photos.

But what does the kitten feel? For them, it’s massive stress. They have been taken away from their mother, siblings, and familiar smells. They’ve traveled by car and have now landed on an alien planet full of new sounds. How can you help them find their way in this new reality so they can quickly become a confident "home tiger"?

1. The One-Room Rule (Sanctuary) 🚪

The biggest mistake is releasing the kitten into the middle of a large living room and opening the whole house to them. Such a space will overwhelm them, and out of fear, the kitten might hide behind the washing machine or under the sofa, not coming out for days.

  • Create a "Starter Room": Choose one quiet room (e.g., a bedroom or a smaller room). Place the litter box, food bowls, scratching post, and bed there.
  • Gradual Space Expansion: Let the kitten spend the first 2-3 days there. Once you see them walking freely around that room, playing, and using the litter box – only then open the door and let them explore the rest of the house at their own pace.

2. The Litter Box is a Priority 🚽

What’s the first thing you should do after bringing the carrier into the "starter room"? Open the door and... place the kitten directly into a clean litter box.

Let them feel the familiar litter under their paws (remember, initially use the same one used at British Rainbow*PL!). The kitten will remember this location as their "ground zero."

3. The "Invisible Cat" Rule 👻

We know you want to hug them, carry them around, and kiss them. But for the first few days, you need to take it easy.

  • Don't pull them out by force: If they hide under the bed or in the scratching post cubby – let them. This is their defense mechanism.
  • Be a piece of furniture: Go into the room with a book or your phone. Sit on the floor and ignore the cat. Read aloud so they get used to your voice. Feline curiosity will eventually win, and they will come out to sniff you on their own.
  • Guests are banned: The first week is time only for the household members. Cancel visits from aunts, uncles, and neighbors who "just came to see the kitten."

4. Diet Without Revolutions 🍽️

The stress of moving often affects a cat’s tummy (loose stools may occur). To avoid adding fuel to the fire, do not change the diet under any circumstances during the first few weeks.

Feed them exactly what you received in our starter pack and what they ate at our cattery. If the cat doesn’t want to eat for the first 24 hours – don’t panic, it’s a normal reaction to stress. The important thing is that they drink water.

5. Children and Other Pets 👶🐶

If there are children at home, have a serious talk with them before the cat arrives. A cat is not a plush toy. Establish a rule: "When the cat is sleeping or in their cubby/on the scratching post – do not touch them."

What about a dog or another resident cat?
Strict isolation is required here (socialization through isolation). The resident and the new kitten must not meet "face to face" for the first few days. Exchange their scents (e.g., by petting both cats with the same glove), and let them sniff each other through the gap under the door. Meeting too quickly is a guarantee of hissing, stress, and ruined relationships for years to come.

Summary: Time and Patience

Every British Shorthair from British Rainbow*PL has a unique character. One might walk out of the carrier with its tail held high and immediately start exploring the kitchen cabinets. Another might need a few days to stop slinking along the walls.

Give them time. Your patience in these first days will pay off with an incredible, trusting relationship for their entire life in your home!
